The cross-inscribed standing stone features in several scenes in the film, perched on the cliffs in Dún Chaoin with a broad vista of the Blasket Islands in the background. It is no longer in this location however, and currently stands in the grounds of the West Kerry Museum in the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh/Ballyferriter, 8km northeast. Despite outward appearances, and its location at an archaeological museum, the “stone” is not real, and was constructed from fiberglass as a prop for the film. It is in imitation of a kind of artefact which is common in the area, a monolith with a Christian symbol carved into its surface. While there are many of these in Corca Dhuibhne, most are considerably smaller that the one shown in the film. Of those found around the country that match the scale of the replica, at least some may be prehistoric standing stones which had the Christian iconography added in the early historic period. A good example of this can be found in Killeen, Co. Mayo. The museum itself tells the story of the Dingle Peninsula from prehistory to modern times, and is well worth a visit.
