The iconic schoolhouse in Ryan’s Daughter is something of an attraction in Dún Chaoin. It was constructed for the production on a dramatic cliff-top location overlooking the Blasket Islands, and was allowed to remain intact when filming was complete. As a result, it became a prominent feature in this stark landscape, and a visual reminder of when Hollywood came to West Kerry for the first time. In the years since its construction, it has fallen into disrepair, and the collapse of the roof in recent years greatly accelerated its decline. Attempts to secure funding for its preservation were unsuccessful. Nonetheless, it persists as a tourist attraction, and features on maps of walking tours, and websites depicting the cultural history of the area. From a cinematographic perspective, it is noteworthy that the remains of the schoolhouse appear in a brief shot in the opening credits of another Hollywood film shot in Dún Chaoin, 1992’s Far and Away.
