The opening credits for Far and Away were filmed at Ceann Sratha/Clogher Head. Of particular note in this sequence is the presence of a building from another Hollywood film, the remains of the schoolhouse from Ryan’s Daughter (1970), which can be seen perched on the cliff edge as the camera pans backwards. This sructure was allowed to remain after production was complete, and by the time it was filmed by Ron Howard in 1991, was in a partially ruined state.
Another incident of note is one of the helicopters filming at this location crashed, after its engine intake was flooded by an unusually large wave. The pilot and camera operator escaped with only minor injuries, but the helicopter sank into the ocean, where it remains to this day.
